Wallpaper - Chonky Boy

Our Chonky Boy wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, brings a bold, painterly character to the wall with an expressive close-up portrait of a plump pigeon. What we particularly like about this design is the rich interplay of color across the bird's plumage, from soft slate blues and gentle greys to iridescent brushwork in vivid violet and turquoise around the neck, accented by bright orange eyes and reddish-pink feet. Painted-looking blocks of deep navy and warm terracotta in the background create a graphic contrast that gives the whole composition a playful yet grounded presence. Like all our wall murals, it is made-to-measure to fit your wall dimensions and produced on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure.

In the room

Because of the strong focal subject and graphic scale, we see this design working especially well as an accent wall in an entryway, living room, study, or hallway. The large subject gives the motif an immediate character that easily carries a wall without needing complex wall decor around it. In a compact space like an entryway or home office, placing the mural on an uninterrupted wall creates an engaging visual anchor the moment you step into the room. In a larger living space, we would position it behind a low credenza or seating area so the pigeon's expressive gaze and painterly feather details remain in clear view.

Styling it

To keep the balance in the room, we suggest letting the wallpaper be the main artistic statement and choosing surrounding furniture with clean, quiet lines. Mid-century modern or contemporary pieces with simple silhouettes work particularly well alongside the graphic quality of the brushwork.

Warm wood tones or painted matte furniture create a natural grounding effect beneath the cool blue tones of the plumage. If you want to introduce small decorative accents, you can echo the warm terracotta background or the subtle turquoise highlights with ceramics or simple art glass, while keeping larger textiles understated in neutral woven textures.

Colour combinations

The motif itself combines a balanced palette of slate blue, cool greys, bright violet, and turquoise against deep navy and warm rust-terracotta tones.

When planning adjacent painted walls and woodwork, soft off-whites, warm greys, or muted stone shades keep the space feeling open and allow the pigeon's colorful plumage to take center stage. For a moodier, more cohesive setting, pulling a deep ink blue or a warm terracotta onto surrounding trim or nearby shelving can frame the wallpaper beautifully while tying the overall room together.
