Wallpaper - Out Of The Box

Our Out Of The Box wallpaper by Kate Jarvik Birch presents an expressive still-life motif featuring a swallowtail butterfly emerging from an open teal-blue box. Painted-looking brushstrokes, graphic black wing contours, and luminous yellow wing segments create an engaging visual focus against a soft, off-white background. The interplay of bold saturated turquoise and delicate red and blue accents on the lower wings gives this piece a distinctive artistic presence. Like all our wall murals, this design is produced made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical surface structure, making it straightforward to hang.

In the room

Because of its strong central composition and painterly character, we see this mural wallpaper working particularly well as a focal feature wall. In a living room, placing it on a clean, uninterrupted wall behind a low sofa or credenza allows the full box and butterfly illustration to remain visible and uncropped. It also brings an artistic, creative energy to a home office, study, or bedroom where a single statement wall can define the character of the space. In rooms with ample natural light, the clear distinction between the turquoise box and the softer neutral background reads especially crisp.

Styling it

We recommend letting this wallpaper take center stage by keeping the surrounding decor relatively uncluttered and intentional.

• Pair with contemporary furniture in clean lines and low profiles so the central motif remains unobstructed.
• Introduce warm wood tones or painted furniture in matte neutral shades to balance the vibrant blue and yellow tones.
• Choose solid, textured fabrics such as woven upholstery or unpatterned curtains rather than competing graphic prints.

Colour combinations

The design itself centers around bright turquoise and cyan blue in the box, balanced by radiant yellow, deep black, and small red and indigo details on the butterfly wings, all resting on an off-white backdrop. For adjacent walls and trim, warm off-white, light cream, or pale linen tones echo the background naturally. If you prefer a richer palette, pulling the deep teal or muted slate blue into surrounding cabinetry, doors, or accent pieces creates a cohesive, grounded look.
