Wallpaper - Preparations

Our Preparations wallpaper brings an intimate still life composition to the wall, created by artist Kate Jarvik Birch. The design captures a quiet kitchen scene featuring a reflective ceramic bowl filled with brown eggs resting on a folded, striped tea towel, with an additional egg placed on the counter alongside strong diagonal shafts of sunlight and shadow. Rendered with a visible painted character and gouache-like brushwork, the motif balances deep inky blues and cool slate greys with warm terracotta egg tones and crisp off-white accents. Produced as made-to-measure, PVC-free wallpaper with a subtle structure in the paper, it introduces an artistic, narrative focal point to any space.

In the room

We see this wall mural working particularly well in a dining room, kitchen dining nook, or culinary living space where its still life subject matter feels right at home. Because the artwork functions as a focused, painterly scene with deliberate play between bright daylight and sharp shadows, it is best displayed on an accent wall where the composition remains largely unobstructed. Positioning the wallpaper behind a dining table or above low kitchen sideboards allows the full narrative details, from the bowl reflections to the striped fabric folds, to be appreciated at eye level.

Styling it

To complement the rich, artisanal quality of our mural wallpapers, we suggest pairing this design with simple, grounding elements that echo its painterly atmosphere.

• Choose natural, warm wood finishes such as oiled oak, walnut, or rustic pine for tables and seating to mirror the warm tones of the eggs and create visual warmth against the cool backdrop.
• Keep surrounding tableware and decorative pieces understated, opting for matte ceramics, stoneware, or wrought iron accents rather than ornate patterns that might compete with the striped cloth in the artwork.
• Frame the wall with soft, unpatterned natural linen textiles in off-white or muted slate to complement the painted cloth texture without overwhelming the room.

Colour combinations

The palette within our wallpaper centres around cool slate blues, deep navy, warm terracotta, soft cream, and muted yellow daylight tones. To create a cohesive look across adjacent walls, we recommend pulling out the subtle off-white and pale cream tones from the tea towel and tabletop for surrounding painted surfaces. If you prefer a richer, more enveloping feel, a deep grey-blue or charcoal on nearby trim and cabinetry anchors the dark tones of the ceramic bowl beautifully. Muted warm neutrals and clay accents also pair naturally with the eggshell tones in the motif.
