Wallpaper - Empty Pews

Captured by photographer Nathan Larson, our Empty Pews wallpaper presents a quiet architectural landscape centered on an old, weathered wooden church. The composition balances the aged texture of peeling clapboard and an arched gothic window against the delicate branches of bare trees, framed by a soft, blurred foreground that draws focus directly to the building. The warm monochrome palette of sepia, soft charcoal, and weathered off-white gives our design a contemplative, rustic character. Like all our wall murals, it is produced made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a light surface structure.

In the room

Because of its central architectural subject and horizontal depth, we see this design working especially well on an uninterrupted feature wall where the entire building and surrounding trees can unfold without obstruction. In a living room or a study, placing the mural wallpaper across the main focal wall behind low seating or a desk allows the soft foreground to sit naturally at the lower portion of the room while keeping the detailed facade at eye level.

For a dining room or guest bedroom, the atmospheric perspective brings depth to compact or long rooms. In rooms with generous daylight, the subtle differences between the sepia undertones and the weathered wood grain become clear, while soft evening lighting emphasizes the design's calm, vintage mood.

Styling it

To complement the rustic, historic feel of the photograph, we suggest pairing this wallpaper with furnishings that have visual presence without competing with the detailed facade.

• Keep surrounding furniture lower to the ground, choosing mid-toned or dark woods such as aged oak, walnut, or painted vintage pieces that echo the building's time-worn aesthetic.
• Balance the graphic detail of the bare branches and clapboard siding with simple, tactile textiles in unpatterned weaves, such as heavy wool throws or matte upholstery in oatmeal and charcoal.
• Incorporate muted metal accents like blackened steel, cast iron, or antique bronze to reflect the vintage architectural character without introducing high-shine reflections.

Colour combinations

The design itself is built on a warm monochrome foundation of soft charcoal, sepia, dusty taupe, and weathered chalky white.

When choosing colors for adjoining walls, woodwork, and large furniture, we recommend pulling from these quiet neutral tones. A soft warm grey or pale taupe on adjacent walls creates a seamless transition that lets the wallpaper remain the focal point. For a more grounded and enveloping atmosphere, deep charcoal or muted espresso on trim and baseboards frames the mural effectively. If you want to introduce subtle color elsewhere in the room, muted earthy tones like dusty olive, faded rust, or warm fawn blend naturally with the sepia values in the print.
