Wallpaper - Still Life Still Death

Created by Kate Jarvik Birch, our Still Life Still Death wallpaper mural brings a striking, painted study of a human skull into architectural perspective. Set within a deep, box-like alcove, the composition plays with shadow, light, and depth, rendered in a refined palette of cool grays, bone white, subtle slate blue, and charcoal undertones. The watercolor-like brushwork adds visible nuance to the bone structure and recessed shadows, giving this mural wallpaper a dramatic yet contemplative character. Printed made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, it offers a distinctive visual statement for spaces that call for bold, artistic focal points.

In the room

Because of its strong central subject and trompe-l'œil depth, we see this wall mural working particularly well as an accent wall where the composition can be viewed straight on. In a home office, library, or dedicated study, positioning it behind a desk or on an open, uninterrupted wall allows the full scale of the alcove perspective to stand out.

The large visual scale of the skull means the design thrives in spaces where it is not crowded by tall bookshelves or excessive wall decor. In a dining room or living room, giving it a prominent wall creates an immediate artistic anchor, where the cool stone and charcoal tones contrast cleanly against simpler surrounding surfaces.

Styling it

To let the artwork remain the clear focal point, we recommend keeping surrounding furnishings tailored and visually grounded. Deep, dark charcoal accents or matte black metal elements echo the dark recesses in the painting, while crisp painted furniture in soft off-white or muted slate ties directly into the highlights of the bone.

For surrounding textures, smooth painted walls, clean-lined timber, and architectural lighting work especially well. A directional spotlight or warm task lighting angled toward an adjacent reading chair can enhance the sense of theatrical shadow without washing out the subtle watercolor tones of the wall mural.

Colour combinations

The palette within our wallpaper is built around bone white, pale cool gray, deep charcoal, and soft hints of slate blue in the surrounding alcove.

When choosing paint colors for adjacent walls and trim, cool off-whites, neutral light grays, or deep graphite create a cohesive, museum-inspired atmosphere. If you prefer introducing more contrast, deep inky blues or muted forest tones provide a sophisticated backdrop that complements the cool undertones of the illustration.
