Wallpaper - Basking In The Light

Our Basking In The Light wallpaper, designed by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures a quiet moment of a tabby cat lounging across a sharp beam of sunlight cutting through a room. The composition uses high visual contrast, pairing deep navy, charcoal, and cool teal floor shadows with warm, radiant yellow window light cast on the floor. With its painted texture and bold diagonal geometry, this design brings an intimate, illustrative character to an accent wall. Like all our wall murals, it is made-to-measure to fit your room dimensions on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure.

In the room

Because of its strong diagonal composition and distinctive subject, we see this design working especially well as a focal wall in a living room, bedroom, or creative home office. The dramatic angle of the sunbeam creates a sense of depth and movement, making it particularly effective on an uninterrupted wall where the full painted scene can stretch out. In a reading corner or alongside lower furniture, the sleeping cat motif anchors the lower portion of the wall while the dark surrounding tones provide a rich, immersive backdrop.

Styling it

We would balance the bold illustrative style of this mural wallpaper with simple, clean-lined furniture. Low-profile seating or mid-century pieces in warm wood tones echo the golden yellow light without competing with the detailed brushwork of the cat. Keep surrounding accessories understated, choosing solid upholstery in deep navy or slate grey to let the vibrant sunbeam stand out as the primary visual focus in the space.

Colour combinations

The palette is built around the striking interplay of warm and cool tones, featuring rich dark teal, charcoal, and warm golden yellows alongside the brown, cream, and ginger shades of the cat's coat. To complement the mural on adjacent walls or trim, consider soft ochre or muted mustard to pull out the sunbeam, or a deep dark blue to extend the shadow tones across the wider room. Muted off-whites and soft warm greys also work well to keep the overall look balanced.
