Wallpaper - Returning to the Nest

Our Returning to the Nest wallpaper captures a quiet wildlife landscape photographed by Nathan Larson. Across a vast panoramic horizon, a great blue heron glides over grassy wetlands and shallow water, framed by distant blue mountain ranges and open skies. The composition divides the wall into broad horizontal bands of soft marsh greens, reflective water, pale grassland, and hazy mountain blues, creating an expansive scenic backdrop. Custom-printed as made-to-measure wall murals, our PVC-free wallpapers bring a calm, open horizon into living spaces with straightforward installation and a subtle paper texture.

In the room

Because this mural wallpaper relies on a wide landscape format, we think it performs best across a broad, relatively uninterrupted wall. In a living room or behind a dining table, the horizontal layers of wetland, water, and mountains create a natural sense of depth that opens up the room visually. The upper half of the composition remains dominated by pale blue sky and soft mountain contours, which keeps the visual weight low and allows the wall to feel airy rather than crowded.

In a home office, study, or bedroom, the wallpaper works especially well on an accent wall behind a desk or low bed frame. Keeping taller storage units on opposing walls allows the heron and the mountain ridgeline to remain completely visible. In rooms with generous daylight, the subtle blue and green gradients across the water and marshland come to life naturally without overpowering surrounding interior surfaces.

Styling it

When styling around this photographic mural, we recommend keeping the surrounding furniture low and grounded to let the panoramic scale take center stage. Low-profile sofas, credenzas, or platform beds in warm, natural wood finishes like pale oak or walnut echo the earthy reeds in the foreground while anchoring the room.

To balance the detailed nature of the photography, choose quiet, solid-coloured textiles for upholstery and window treatments rather than competing patterns. Woven textures in neutral beige, undyed wool, or muted grey harmonize effortlessly with the outdoor setting, while matte black or brushed metal accents provide clean, modern definition against the soft landscape tones.

Colour combinations

The palette in our wallpaper centres on soft slate blues, dusty mountain tones, and pale sky hues, grounded below by meadow greens, wheat-toned grasses, and watery reflections. The heron introduces darker charcoal and blue-grey notes that punctuate the lighter backdrop.

To build a cohesive room around these mural wallpapers, consider painting adjacent walls in soft off-white, light warm grey, or subtle mist blue. For larger furniture or cabinetry, deep navy, forest green, or charcoal creates a strong visual anchor that draws out the darker tones of the bird and distant tree lines. Lighter accents in sand, linen, or pale sage will keep the overall scheme open and balanced.
