Wallpaper - Fluid Thoughts

Our Fluid Thoughts wallpaper brings together the illustrative charm of artist Kate Jarvik Birch with a striking trompe-l'œil composition. At the centre of the design, a richly detailed koi fish in shades of vibrant orange, warm vermilion, and soft white appears to swim directly across a torn sheet of lined notebook paper. Set against a deep, painterly teal backdrop, the cast shadows create a distinct sense of three-dimensional depth. Like all our wall murals, this design is made to measure and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle paper structure, offering an imaginative focal point for any interior.

In the room

Because of its bold visual narrative and central placement, we see this wall mural working particularly well on an uninterrupted feature wall where the complete motif can be enjoyed without disruption. In a home office, study, or creative studio, the playful combination of stationery and aquatic movement makes an engaging backdrop behind a desk or open shelving. In a contemporary living room or hallway, giving the design generous wall space allows the contrast between the vivid orange koi and the deep teal background to define the atmosphere of the room.

Styling it

We recommend balancing the painterly, surreal quality of the wallpaper with clean, understated furniture. Simple silhouettes in mid-tone woods or painted finishes in soft charcoal let the artwork command the room's visual focus without competing for attention.

To complement the rich teal and vibrant orange tones, incorporate smooth ceramic accents or quiet matte metal elements in lighting or shelf brackets. Keeping surrounding textiles relatively neutral, such as unpatterned weaves in ivory or pale grey, ensures the wall remains the primary statement piece in the space.

Colour combinations

The palette of our wallpaper centres on the vivid contrast between the deep teal background and the warm tones of the koi fish, which include vermilion, fiery orange, and subtle golden highlights alongside crisp paper white and soft grey shadow tones.

When choosing paint colours for adjacent walls, trim, or nearby cabinetry, a muted off-white or light grey provides a clean frame that lets the paper motif stand out. Alternatively, embracing a deeper palette by pulling the rich petrol teal onto neighbouring walls or woodwork creates an enveloping, cohesive atmosphere. Warm accents in rust or terracotta can also be introduced through cushions or decor to subtly echo the shades in the koi.
