Wallpaper - Meeting With An Old Friend

Our Meeting With An Old Friend wallpaper by Kate Jarvik Birch brings a playful, painted character to the wall with an expressive close-up of a classic yellow rubber duck resting in water. Rendered with painterly gouache-like brushwork, visible highlights, and detailed water droplets across a cool grey and muted blue background, the composition delivers strong visual warmth and cheerful nostalgia. Produced as a made-to-measure, PVC-free mural wallpaper with a subtle paper texture, it creates an eye-catching focal point in any room.

In the room

Because the motif centers on a single, large-scale subject with rich painterly detail, we like placing this wall mural where it can be seen straight on. It works wonderfully as an accent wall in a children's bedroom, nursery, playroom, or a bright family bathroom. In a compact space like a powder room or dressing area, the duck's warm yellow and orange tones create a charming contrast against cooler tiled or painted surfaces. For larger rooms, we suggest giving the design a clear, relatively open wall section so the water droplets and brushstrokes can be fully appreciated without being obscured by tall furniture.

Styling it

We recommend keeping the surrounding interior simple and letting the artwork's personality lead the space. Simple white or light-painted furniture pairs naturally with the grey aquatic backdrop, while clean-lined fixtures prevent the room from feeling cluttered. If you want to echo the palette, small accent pieces in bright yellow, tangerine, or soft aqua bring out the warmth of the motif without competing with its bold presence.

Colour combinations

The design is defined by vivid canary yellow, warm amber, and bright red-orange in the duck, grounded by slate grey, soft steel blue, and crisp white in the water and foam. Around the mural, we would pair it with clean whites, cool greys, or muted teal tones on adjoining walls to let the yellow tones pop. Warm natural light or soft warm-white lighting will enhance the golden glow of the duck while keeping the background cool and balanced.
