Wallpaper - Study of Tufted Hairgrass

Our Study of Tufted Hairgrass wallpaper brings a quiet, painterly botanical study into the home, created in collaboration with Wild Apple Portfolio. Set against a deep, enveloping dark charcoal background, the composition traces an arching stem with broad, leafy foliage transitioning into delicate, feathery sprays of grass. We particularly like the contrast between the solid green leaves and the ethereal, fine line work of the pale seed heads, which seem to drift across the dark ground. As one of our custom made mural wallpapers, each order is printed to measure, PVC-free, and produced on paper with a subtle physical surface structure.

In the room

Because of its deep background and sweeping botanical movement, we see this wall mural working especially well on a wide, uninterrupted wall where the full diagonal arc of the stem has room to breathe. In a living room or a dining room, positioning the wallpaper behind a low sofa or a dining credenza allows the delicate details in the upper half to remain completely visible.

The design also suits a bedroom, where the darker ground creates an intimate, cocooning atmosphere behind the headboard. In spaces with generous daylight, the subtle tonal shifts between the sage greens, muted ochres, and deep shadow tones become particularly rewarding to observe throughout the day.

Styling it

When styling around this design, we prefer to balance its rich, dark backdrop with quiet surrounding elements that let the botanical artwork stand out. Clean-lined furniture in warm wood tones, such as mid-tone oak or walnut, grounds the dark wall while echoing the organic theme.

We would keep surrounding upholstery and window dressings simple and unpatterned, choosing woven fabrics in warm stone, oat, or charcoal. Accents in muted brass or matte black complement the botanical lines without competing with the intricate grass plumes.

Colour combinations

The wallpaper is built upon an inky black and deep charcoal base, layered with soft olive, leaf green, pale sage, and muted straw tones in the seed heads. Subtle shadowed undertones of dusky mauve and taupe also appear within the background branches.

To create a balanced interior, we suggest pairing this design with wall paint in soft off-white, chalky greige, or deep charcoal on adjacent walls or trim. For larger pieces of furniture or upholstery, earthy neutrals like linen, moss green, or warm ochre tie in naturally with the painted botanical study.
