Wallpaper - The Opening Note

Our The Opening Note wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures the fluid motion of red wine pouring into a clear wine glass against a brushed teal and slate backdrop. The composition combines bold graphic shapes with painterly brushwork, highlighting the deep burgundy and ruby tones of the wine alongside the glassy reflections and glossy bottle neck. As with all our wallpapers, this mural wallpaper is made-to-measure to fit your specific wall dimensions and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical surface structure.

In the room

Because of its expressive scale and strong focal motif, we see this wall mural working particularly well in dining rooms, open-plan kitchen and dining spaces, or a dedicated entertaining area. In a dining room, positioning the wallpaper across a feature wall behind the table gives the space a warm, convivial focal point without overwhelming surrounding walls.

For an open-plan layout, giving the design an uninterrupted wall area lets the dynamic diagonal line of the pouring bottle and the deep red hues anchor the dining zone. The rich contrast between the cool teal backdrop and the warm red tones also works nicely in rooms with ambient evening lighting, where the deeper palette feels intimate and grounded.

Styling it

When styling around a bold, painterly motif like this, we suggest letting the wallpaper act as the primary visual statement in the space. Pairing it with warm wood dining tables, such as walnut or rich oak, naturally complements the deep burgundy and red tones in the glass. Keeping surrounding furniture silhouettes clean and understated ensures the focus stays on the artwork.

Colour combinations

The design itself is built around a palette of deep wine red, ruby, and warm berry shades contrasted against muted teal, slate blue, and cool grey highlights on the glass. To create a cohesive look across the room, you could pull the deep teal into adjacent painted trim or accent walls for an enveloping, moody atmosphere. Alternatively, pairing the mural with warm off-whites, soft greys, or muted ochre accents brings out the warmth of the red wine while maintaining a balanced, airy feel.
