Wallpaper - Charles Looks Up

Created by Kate Jarvik Birch, our Charles Looks Up wallpaper mural presents a surreal, painterly landscape that immediately draws the eye upward. A suited figure in a fedora stands with his back turned in an open, golden field, looking out toward a dramatic blue sky where a large, watchful eye gazes down from behind radiant clouds. The composition has a distinct gouache or watercolor-like appearance, blending rich earth tones, cerulean skies, and soft cloud shading. Produced as made-to-measure, PVC-free mural wallpapers with a subtle physical structure in the paper, this design brings an imaginative, artistic focal point to interior walls.

In the room

Because the composition relies on strong vertical storytelling and a centered motif, we see this working best on an accent wall where the full height and vertical alignment can be appreciated. In a living room or home study, placing this mural wallpaper behind a low-backed sofa, credenza, or desk ensures the standing figure and sweeping sky remain clearly visible. The open horizon line and bright blue upper half bring an expansive, airy feel to a room, making it an engaging backdrop for spaces meant for reading, conversation, or creative thought.

Styling it

To let the surreal narrative and painterly brushwork take center stage, we recommend keeping the surrounding interior relatively grounded and uncluttered:

• Choose low-profile furniture in warm woods or muted neutral upholstery, which anchors the lower half of the wall without competing with the standing figure.
• Draw inspiration from the mid-century silhouette of the character by incorporating vintage or clean-lined modern pieces with simple geometry.
• Introduce understated textiles such as unpatterned linen or wool in sand or soft blue tones to balance the visual weight of the mural.

Colour combinations

The palette in our wallpaper centres on contrasting golden wheat tones, earthy browns, and luminous sky blues, accented by soft greys and white in the cloud formations. For surrounding walls and trim, warm neutrals such as soft cream, oat, or light biscuit complement the golden field below. If you want a moodier, enveloping palette, pulling a muted slate blue or dusty denim from the sky helps tie adjacent walls directly into the upper half of the artwork.
