Wallpaper - Charcoal Trace I

Our Charcoal Trace I wallpaper, created with artist June Erica Vess, brings the expressive energy of modern abstract painting directly to the wall. The composition balances broad, swept brushstrokes in soft cream, warm sand, and chalky white against confident accents of deep charcoal, slate, and rich earth brown. Fine, sketch-like charcoal lines trace across the painted planes, giving the design an airy sense of movement and graphic definition. Printed as made-to-measure, PVC-free mural wallpapers with a subtle structure in the paper, this design creates a sophisticated visual focal point without overwhelming the room.

In the room

Because of its painterly scale and sweeping diagonal flow, we see this design working particularly well on an open, relatively uninterrupted wall where the full scope of the brushwork can be appreciated. In a spacious living room behind a low-backed sofa, or across a main dining room wall, the artwork functions like an expansive wall mural that anchors the entire space.

The balance of pale, luminous tones and darker charcoal marks makes it versatile across different room layouts. In a primary bedroom behind a headboard, the lighter cream areas keep the space open and calm, while the deep charcoal traces frame the sleeping area with clear graphic intention. If you choose to place it in a study or hallway, keeping nearby furniture low helps maintain the visual rhythm of the gestural brush marks.

Styling it

We recommend styling around this wallpaper with clean, contemporary silhouettes that let the expressive artwork lead the room. Furniture with low profiles and simple geometry prevents visual competition with the dynamic brush marks.

Natural finishes work especially well here. We would pair the wallpaper with warm timber pieces, such as oiled oak or walnut, which pick up the subtle earthy undertones in the painting. For upholstery and textiles, look to muted, tactile weaves in oatmeal, flax, or pale grey, perhaps accented by a single dark metal lamp base or a charcoal side table to echo the strongest marks in the motif.

Colour combinations

The foundation of our design rests on soft off-white, warm parchment, and subtle beige, contrasted with striking charcoal black, slate blue-grey, and hints of warm chestnut brown.

When choosing paint colors for adjoining walls and woodwork, we like using a soft, warm neutral drawn from the lighter areas of the wallpaper to create a seamless transition. For doors, baseboards, or trim where you want a crisp, modern outline, an off-black or deep slate grey draws out the charcoal pencil lines and grounds the room. If you prefer a richer, more enveloping feel, warm taupe or deeper sand tones on surrounding surfaces will highlight the lighter brushstrokes across the mural.
