Wallpaper - Where The Lights Begin

Our Where The Lights Begin wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures a quiet dusk overlooking a glowing city valley from an elevated roadside. The composition balances deep indigo and evening blue tones in the sky and distant mountain silhouettes with vibrant points of yellow, white, and coral city lights stretching across the horizon. Painted telephone poles and street details in the foreground bring depth and scale to the scene. Made to measure and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical surface structure, this design is straightforward to hang and brings an evocative, painterly atmosphere to interior spaces.

In the room

We see this wall mural working particularly well as a focal feature in a living room, bedroom, or home study. Because the artwork features a rich landscape perspective with a descending road and a sprawling sea of evening lights, it naturally draws the eye outward and creates a sense of depth across an uninterrupted accent wall. Placing it on a main wall behind a bed or low-profile sofa allows the expansive sky and distant hills to remain fully visible, while the deeper tones at the base anchor the lower half of the space.

Styling it

To complement the rich evening palette and painterly texture of the design, we recommend pairing it with warm, low-contrast furnishings. Mid-toned or dark wood finishes, such as walnut or stained oak, echo the deeper foreground shadows without competing with the motif. Matte black or muted bronze metal accents on lighting fixtures and shelving pick up the graphic silhouettes of the utility poles, while soft, unpatterned upholstery in charcoal, navy, or warm taupe lets the illuminated cityscape take centre stage.

Colour combinations

The design is built on a foundation of deep indigo, twilight blue, and dusky slate, contrasted by lively flecks of amber gold, soft white, and warm coral red. For adjacent painted walls and woodwork, we recommend muted off-whites, cool slate greys, or deep twilight navies that seamlessly extend the moody atmosphere of the sky. If you want to introduce a subtle accent colour in surrounding cushions or ceramics, soft ochre or muted terracotta brings out the warmth of the distant headlights and glowing windows.
