Wallpaper - Us But Sardines

Our Us But Sardines wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, brings an expressive still-life motif to life with two painted sardines swimming in opposite directions against a warm, dusty pink background. What we particularly like about this design is the vibrant contrast between the cool silvery blues, turquoise, and deep purple shadows of the fish and the soft, salmon-toned canvas behind them. The painterly brushstrokes give the composition a charming, artful character that stands out on any feature wall. Like all our mural wallpapers, this design is made-to-measure to fit your wall dimensions and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure.

In the room

We love seeing this wallpaper bring personality and warmth to communal spaces. In a dining room or kitchen dining nook, the motif creates an engaging visual focal point around the table, introducing colour and artistic wit without overwhelming the space.

Because the composition has generous breathing room around the two central figures, we find it works exceptionally well on an accent wall behind low furniture, such as a dining credenza or a kitchen bench. It also makes a playful statement in an entryway or hallway, where the distinct colour contrast can be appreciated up close as guests arrive.

Styling it

When styling around this design, we suggest leaning into simple silhouettes and warm, honest materials that let the painted artwork remain the hero of the room. Warm wood furniture, such as mid-tone oak or vintage pine, complements the earthy pink background naturally and grounds the cooler tones in the fish.

To balance the graphic shadows and bright turquoise accents in the print, pair the wall with understated ceramics, matte black hardware, or deep plum and indigo textiles. Keeping larger upholstered pieces in solid, neutral tones prevents visual clutter while echoing the playful Mediterranean still-life feel of the motif.

Colour combinations

The palette in this design is anchored by the warm terracotta pink backdrop, set against vivid cobalt blue, turquoise, soft silver, and deep violet-grey shadows on the fish.

For surrounding walls and trim, we recommend softer plaster pinks, muted terracotta, or warm off-whites to create a cohesive, enveloping space. If you prefer to draw out the cooler accents, deep navy, slate blue, or dark aubergine on neighbouring cabinetry or woodwork provide a rich and confident frame for the mural.
