Wallpaper - The Day Begins

Our The Day Begins wallpaper mural brings an expressive, painterly close-up of a morning espresso to the wall. Created by Kate Jarvik Birch, the artwork captures a rich cup of black coffee in a vibrant red ceramic cup and saucer, complete with a reflective spoon resting alongside. Set against a clean sky blue background, the composition uses bold gouache-like brushstrokes, deep coffee browns, creamy crema bubbles, and crisp white highlights that give the subject immediate energy and graphic punch. Made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, it offers a distinctive focal point for spaces where people gather to eat, drink, and start their routine.

In the room

We see this wall mural working especially well in a kitchen, breakfast nook, or dining space where its morning theme connects directly to daily life. Because the composition is a bold, large-scale graphic statement rather than an all-over small repeat, it works best on an accent wall or dining area feature wall that can be viewed from a slight distance. In an open-plan kitchen and dining area, placing this mural wallpaper behind a dining table or near a coffee station gives the space a clear visual anchor without overwhelming the rest of the room.

Styling it

To balance the strong red and blue tones of the artwork, we would keep surrounding cabinetry and furniture relatively clean and understated.

• Pair with natural light oak or clean white dining furniture to let the bold colours and painted textures stand out as the hero element.
• Introduce subtle red or glossy ceramic accessories on open shelving to subtly echo the cup's saturated glaze without cluttering the wall area.
• Position the design where overhead pendant lighting or clear daylight illuminates the detailed highlights and painted crema bubbles in the cup.

Colour combinations

The motif centers on vibrant cherry red, rich espresso brown, foamy cream, and deep charcoal black, all framed by a bright, clear sky blue. For surrounding walls and trim, warm off-whites, soft bone, or muted cream tones keep the atmosphere light while allowing the red saucer and blue backdrop to pop. If you prefer a more cohesive colour palette, pulling a soft slate blue or a warm taupe for adjacent surfaces creates a natural transition.
