Wallpaper - Parallel Currents

Designed by Kate Jarvik Birch, our Parallel Currents wallpaper mural captures two koi fish gliding through deep water alongside floating lily pads. What we particularly like about this design is the painterly contrast between the vivid orange, red, and white markings of the fish and the rich dark teal and inky black tones of the pond. Crisp green lily pads introduce a fresh botanical element that balances the fluid movement of the composition. Produced as a made-to-measure design on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, it brings an expressive artistic presence to any interior wall.

In the room

Because of its dynamic scale and strong visual contrast, we see this wall mural working especially well on an accent wall in a living room, dining room, or bedroom. Placing the design behind a sofa or bed headboard allows the large-scale koi to create a striking focal point without overwhelming the rest of the space. In a spacious entryway or dining area, an uninterrupted wall gives the sweeping curves of the water and fish room to make an immediate impact.

Styling it

To let the expressive brushwork and rich colors take center stage, we recommend pairing this mural wallpaper with streamlined furniture in clean silhouettes. Warm mid-tone wood or dark-stained pieces harmonize beautifully with the earthy and deep water tones, while matte black accents can subtly echo the inky dark background. Keep surrounding upholstery and soft furnishings in solid textures, such as washed cotton or smooth wool, so the wallpaper carries the visual pattern in the room.

Colour combinations

The motif is built around vivid koi orange, deep crimson red, soft white, deep pond teal, ink black, and moss green. For adjacent painted walls, we suggest pulling from the softer, neutral elements of the mural, such as an off-white, soft stone, or pale muted grey. If you prefer a moodier atmosphere, a deep teal, navy, or charcoal on surrounding trim or cabinetry will draw out the depths of the water and create a cohesive, enveloping space.
